Light on Adoption
Light on Adoption weaves my story, my research and adoptee voices, exposing the invisible underbelly of the happy-ever-after myth of adoption. It is a summation of the knowledge I’ve acquired over decades of searching, learning, and healing the wound of separation, adoption loss and grief.
This book has been written for my adoption community, for friends, family and loved ones of adoptees, and for wider society to understand more about the complex ramifications of removing new-borns from their mothers, their clan, and their original identities.
About the Author
‘Connection is Everything and Everything is Connected’
The main theme of my adoption story is connection/disconnection. My life has shown me the stark difference between both conditions. We all know how good it feels to be connected to someone, a pet or a person. Even a fleeting moment of connection warms the heart. In contrast, disconnection feels cold and painful. I’m not talking about loneliness or being alone. I’m talking about feeling utterly unconnected to anyone - isolated, unseen, and unsupported. This was my reality for many years.
To be prematurely separated from our mothers is an unnatural and traumatic experience that has set many adoptees on a particularly difficult path. My own search has taken me on a long and arduous road where I ultimately found and re-connected with the missing me who had been lost since my birth. I’ve learned that inner reunion is the most rewarding reunion. If I can find a way from the lost and lonely alien I was, to becoming a whole and happy human, anyone can.
I wrote this book to illuminate the hidden world I have inhabited as an adoptee. It’s been a scary undertaking to expose some of my secrets, and perhaps be viewed as an ungrateful adoptee! But I’ve been compelled to speak up and speak out about some of the lesser known realties of adoption. I hope that our adoptee stories will continue to come to light, and that our voices will become more audible within the broader community chorus.
Welcome to my book, and please let me know what you think.
